Mary Buttolph grew up in Virginia and attended Virginia Tech where she earned a degree in Fisheries Science. After working for the Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest and the Intrmountain West, she decided to return to school to study photography. Buttolph earned a degree from RIT and is now pursuing a masters degree in photography at The Newhouse School at Syracuse University.
